Disposal Of Your Old Fridge Or Freezer

Disposal of fridges and freezers

Hello guys. Tom Pickering here, Clearance and Clean Up.
In this short blog, I'm going to talk to you about the removal and disposal of fridges and freezers.

The tips I’m going to share apply to both domestic and commercial appliances.

Fridges and freezers come in many different shapes, sizes and colours. They can be small under-counter domestic fridges or freezers. They can be large commercial fridges or freezers.  Bottle fridge from a bar, or a chest freezer in a corner shop used for storing ice cream. Whatever their size and shape, the issues around their disposal are the same.

Fridge Disposal.

But before we talk about their disposal, it’s probably a good idea for me to explain why they are so different to other white goods, for example a cooker. The reason fridges and freezers are hard to dispose of is due to the insulation and gases inside them. The insulation is something called a polyolefins, which is a rigid foam insulator, and this is widely used in modern fridges and freezers.

The gas is called a Freon gas. Neither are substances that can be just thrown in a bin – they need professionally disposing of and this comes at a cost.

Fly Tipping.

You will have seen fridges and freezers that have been put on street corners, or dumped (fly-tipped) in your local towns and cities. The people who do this don’t want to pay the cost of disposal. But, actually, even if you are willing to pay many companies will not remove these items.

However, its so important to dispose of such items correctly for both for the environment and to save your council spending thousands of pounds clearing illegal fly tipping sites.
So, what do you do if you want to dispose of your items correctly and cannot transport them to your local tip yourself?

You basically have two choices:

One, you can call the local council and ask them to collect the appliance and dispose of it for you. However, Councils operate to strict route planning and so you may have to wait a couple of weeks for them to be able to collect from you.

The other option is to use a man and van rubbish collection service like Clearance and Cleanup. However, as mentioned above, not all companies like ours will take fridges and freezers due to the costs associated with disposing of them.

Transfer Stations.

Some local transfer stations don’t accept them and so the companies who use those stations will refuse to collect. And, if you do find a company who will dispose of them for you this will come at a extra charge.
It may take some time to wait for the council to collect or cost you extra to have a man and van rubbish collection service remove your item, but please be responsible when discarding your old appliance. Fly tipping costs the country £millions and that money could be spent on so much better causes.
