Scary Sussex Spring Clean

python-house-clearance-spring-cleanLast week in Sussex, Mr Martin decided he was going to undertake a Spring clean on a empty bungalow, presumably due to the fact that the weather had begun to turn and Spring was most definitely on its way.  But this Spring cleaning mission did not quite go the way he had initially planned.  Mr Martin, on his house clearance, spotted a red light coming from the inside of a cupboard of which he had never seen before and of course opened the door…what happened next was something he would never have expected!  He came, quite literally, face to face with a 13 foot yellow and white snake. At first Mr Martin did not actually think that the snake was real but then the snake began to move and he realised that the Burmese python was still living.   He shut the door, kept it shut and kept checking it was so and proceeded to ring the RSPCA, who unfortunately did not have anyone they could send out.  Mrs Martin had the idea that they could contact the Hastings Reptile Rescue who came to the rescue immediately on hearing the alarming story.  The albino Burmese python is now safe and well and has settled in nicely in to her much bigger living quarters which do not involving an airing cupboard.  She will be pleased to know that she will not be involved in another house clearance again!

House Clearance History

world-war-one-house-clearance-sheffieldHe was an electrical installations manager working for Sheffield City Council until he went to fight.  But on 26th September 1915, Sgt Francis Stubbs was killed in action in France, having been serving with the Royal Engineers.  He was 35 years old at the time and sadly, had a daughter on the way, which he never had the fortune of meeting, but she was given a suitcase full of his possessions which she kept for the entirety of her life.  When she died however, her house was subjected to a house clearance, where the suitcase filled with WWI items came in to the possession of David Empson, a historian and collector.  This suitcase was very much seen as a ‘one off’ due to the fact that the collection of contents inside it told an entire story of one life.  Stories gripping, when it was learnt that a comrade of Sgt Stubbs removed all of the items out of his pockets when he lay dying, having been caught in an explosion.  Thanks to the house clearance the smashed pocket watch, blood stained identity tag and pipe all live on to tell their incredible story, despite not being in the hands of Sgt Stubbs’ relatives any longer.
