Clearance and Cleanup will Help You Spring in to Action this Easter

spring-clean-house-clearance-sheffield-chesterfield-worksopSpring has sprung and it is the perfect time of year for everyone to be spring cleaning their house.  For many people this is the time of year when they decide to tidy up, sort things out, out their house on the market and move on to pastures new.  But this is when people often discover all sort of items which they had completely forgotten all about, lurking in their attic or basement.  Do you know what’s hiding in yours?

Hiding House Clearance Treasures

Interestingly, during house clearances, it has been found that an estimated 40% of us own antiques or vintage items and 16% have unknowingly given these, often high value items away, either to friends, relatives or charity shops.  Strangely, even when a lot of us know that we have these items, it is interesting to know that we don’t tend to bother listing them on our home insurance, as a nation, either.  When asked during this survey, members of the public were unable to estimate the worth of the contents of the house due to the fact that they do not do a regular content checks, cover or valuations.  This can often be because we do not realise that some things are of particular value.  When we say antiques, yes we are referring to large items such as a Victorian sideboard, but there are much smaller, younger items which will surprise you with their value and these are examples of items which are often not taken in to consideration for valuation.  A good example of this is a Meccano, clockwork race car from somewhere around 1915 – this may have been small in size, but when sold, gained almost £500.

Perhaps, therefore it is time this Spring, to see what is hiding out in your attic or cellar.  It could be something you have been missing, a way a making yourself a little extra cash or decluttering your home before a house moveClearance and Cleanup can assist you with decluttering your home, moving house or furniture removal.

House Clearance History

world-war-one-house-clearance-sheffieldHe was an electrical installations manager working for Sheffield City Council until he went to fight.  But on 26th September 1915, Sgt Francis Stubbs was killed in action in France, having been serving with the Royal Engineers.  He was 35 years old at the time and sadly, had a daughter on the way, which he never had the fortune of meeting, but she was given a suitcase full of his possessions which she kept for the entirety of her life.  When she died however, her house was subjected to a house clearance, where the suitcase filled with WWI items came in to the possession of David Empson, a historian and collector.  This suitcase was very much seen as a ‘one off’ due to the fact that the collection of contents inside it told an entire story of one life.  Stories gripping, when it was learnt that a comrade of Sgt Stubbs removed all of the items out of his pockets when he lay dying, having been caught in an explosion.  Thanks to the house clearance the smashed pocket watch, blood stained identity tag and pipe all live on to tell their incredible story, despite not being in the hands of Sgt Stubbs’ relatives any longer.

picasso-house-clearance-cleanupOn the 28th July 2016, New Lanark in Scotland, will be hosting the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.  New Lanark is said to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing and historic settings that has ever been filmed for the Antiques Roadshow.  It is a world heritage site illustrating industrial history, which includes an 18th century mill village and a team of highly knowledgeable experts to educate any visitors, answering any questions they may have, during their time visiting New Lanark.

The House Clearance Jackpot

2015’s Antiques Roadshows filming day, attracted an incredible 35,000 people to attended the day and bring their personal belonging which were of interest and anything they wanted a valuation for.  These included mesmerising items, such as JFKs former jacket, an £80,000 musical penknife and a toy panda which once flew with the ‘Dambusters’ themselves.  But, what was the most spectacular find of the day, was a sketch which was believed to have been undertaken by Picasso.   This, however, was not the reason it was thought of to be so spectacular.  It was, in fact, due to it having bought from a sale post house clearance for just a couple of pounds.

Clearing a Council or Private Rented Property?

Housing_Clearing_Cleanup_Privaterented_Council_MovingIf you need to clear a private rented, council property or house that is being returned to the housing association, then do you know where to start?  So many people either leave them in the incorrect, not agreed state or have questions which are not answered in time for their move.  So we thought it would be helpful for us to write a checklist for you, to help you with your move.

Clearing your Property Correctly

Here are the most important points and questions to ask or raise with your landlord:

  1. When do the premises need to be vacated by? This is often the date that the rent is paid up until.
  2. How clean does the property need to be – clean or spotless and immaculate?
  3. Do the carpets need removing? Most councils want the carpet to be removed.
  4. Does the lino in the bathroom and the kitchen need removing?
  5. Are the curtains to be left so that the property is secure as it will look lived in?
  6. Are there any items of furniture that belong to either the landlord or the housing association?
  7. Who does the cooker belong to?
  8. If your property has a fitted stairlift, you must check whether it has been provided by the council or the landlord. Does it need removing?
  9. You must be happy with the condition you are leaving your communal areas or outbuildings.
  10. Who is paying the invoice? Almost every time this is the tenant, but sometimes the landlord may part for particular parts or services to be undertaken, such as the removal of the carpets.

How can Clearance and Clean Up help you?

With regards to the above list, we can do a lot to help you…well, actually we can do everything on the list that the landlords needs you to have done!

We can:

  1. Help you empty, clean, vacate and move to a high standard and on time.
  2. We can clean your property to the highest of standard and leave nothing but the shell of the property if that is what is asked of you. Our standard service includes a sweep out of your property.  Please specify that if you would like us to deep clean when you phone us, as this is not done as part of a standard service, but can easily be arranged.
  3. We frequently remove carpets from council or private rented properties.
  4. We are able to remove lino, too, if your landlord requires this.
  5. We can remove and dispose of curtains for you.
  6. We are able to move furniture for you or your landlord.
  7. We are able to disconnect your cooker safely if it needs removing and happily do this you at no extra cost.
  8. It is far cheaper for you if we remove your stairlift for you than a stairlift company.
  9. If anything needs in communal areas or outbuildings is yours needs lifting or removing then we can do this for you. You don’t have to lift a thing – that’s our job – moving is stressful enough!
  10. We keep the price down in every possible way we can because we know how difficult moving property is! Our honesty is what you can rely on and what we pride ourselves on.

Where do people go wrong with their House Clearance?

tom-pickering-clearance-and-cleanup-sheffield-house-clearance

Tom Pickering, the owner of Clearance and Clean Up, is asked certain questions extremely frequently.  So we thought, what better than writing an article in an attempt to answer those questions for you.  We don’t want moving house or house clearances to be as daunting as people often think they are.  They key to everything is to be as organised as is humanly possible!

In a nutshell, if you are disorganised (don’t know where anything is, where anything is going, don’t know what you do or don’t want to keep, haven’t emptied any cupboards, wardrobes etc., haven’t given any clear instructions to the clearance team before they arrive, haven’t asked neighbours for a access permission or cleared a route for the clearance team) then this will lead to clearance team having to be on site for much longer, which in return will, without doubt cost you more money!  So, if you are wanting to be economical, be organised!

How can our House Clearance go smoothly and be economical?

  1. Get yourself organised – this is the singularly most important point for a smooth, successful and the most economical house clearancepossible for everybody involved.
  2. By removing the items that you know you definitely want to keep enable the house clearance team to get their job done with minimum fuss or confusion.
  3. Any reusable items can be given to your family and friends, though I’m sure they will only be particularly appreciative if they are in a good condition – it’s a nice way to recycle your used items without throwing them away, if you just don’t have the space or don’t need them yourself any more.
  4. Bag up any clothing, towels and bedding BEFORE we arrive! By doing this it can really speed up the house clearance process, reducing the length of time that we are on site for, dramatically.
  5. Empty your cupboards on to the side eg. In the kitchen/ bathroom.
  6. Ask your neighbours for permission, regarding parking and pedestrian access.
  7. Make sure there is clear access for the clearance team to manoeuvre and for the vans, too – the quicker and it is easier it is for us, the more cost effective it is for you and obviously we want to avoid damaging anything or obtaining any injuries from tripping over anything etc.
  8. If you are able to do anything to aid your own move, in advance, such as prepare, pack up or move certain items, the less time we will spend in your property and therefore the cheaper your house clearancewill be. The longer it takes us, the more expensive it will be for you.
